The main two words in the German language to describe a person or object as “reliable” or “dependable” are “zuverlässig” and “verlässlich”:

– “Mein alter Wagen ist immer noch total zuverlässig/verlässlich.” – “My old car is still totally reliable.”
– “Der Fritz ist in letzter Zeit nicht mehr so zuverlässig/verlässlich.” – “(That) Fritz has not been so reliable lately.”

In order to say “to rely on something” one would normally use the reflexive construction “sich auf etwas verlassen”:

– “Ich verlasse mich voll und ganz auf dich.” – “I am fully and totally relying on you.”
– “Du kannst dich nicht mehr auf ihn verlassen.” – “You can’t rely on him anymore.”

Note: However, “to be reliant on someone” (financially, for example) in German is “auf jemanden angewiesen sein”:

“Wir sind nun auf externe Hilfe angewiesen.” – “We now have to rely on external help.”
