How to apply in German

Useful German Word of the Day: “Bewerbung” (f.) – this German word means “application” and can be used for jobs, internships, scholarships, shared flats and even marriage proposals! The verb is “sich bewerben”:

“Ich schreibe meine Bewerbung.” – “I am writing my application.”
“Ich bewerbe mich um eine Stelle.” – “I am applying for a position.”
“Er bewirbt sich bei Expath.” – “He is applying at Expath.”

Note: The preposition when applying FOR something is typically “um”, though many people also use “auf” and, incorrectly, “für”. When applying AT a place, it’s “bei”.
